Abstract

Strange stars as sources of gravitational waves

In this talk I will provide a summary of the various ways that a strange star may emit gravitational waves. I will compare and constrast the results with the "standard" neutron star case, and aim to assess whether we can hope to use gravitational-wave signal to distinguish between the two classes of compact stars. I will consider gravitational radiation from phase transitions, asymmetric "mountains", and pulsation instabilities like that of the inertial r-modes. The discussion will point to problems that need to be addressed in future work.
