Abstract

PT4

The Jovian quadrupole gravitational influence on light bending detectable by Gaia measurements.

Gaia will carry out general relativistic tests not only by means of global astrometric measurements but also by differential ones, implemented in the form of repeated Eddington-like experiments in the vicinity of a giant planet. Several Montecarlo runs, based on simulated observations, have shown that Gaia can provide, for the first time, the detection of the bending effect due to the quadrupole moment of Jupiter with a 3-sigma confidence level. Further simulations developed by using GSCII catalogue will be put in evidence the same effect within a realistic scenario, like an open cluster behind Jupiter as seen from the Gaia point of view.
