Abstract

GW3

The detection of GW with matter wave interferometers

We calculate and compare the response of light wave interferometers and matter wave interferometers to gravitational waves. Without resolving the technical difficulties, we brought out the necessary matter wave interferometers' main characteristics in order to reach the sensitivities of existing (Virgo) or planned (LISA) light wave interferometers. We find that metric matter wave interferometers will not challenge kilometric light wave interferometers such as Virgo, but could be a good candidate for the detection of very low frequency gravitational waves. The major interest in building such matter wave interfometers is their small dimension (~ one meter) which permits to cool them to very low temperatures (to fight the thermal noise).
