Approximate waveform templates for detection of extreme mass ratio inspirals with LISA

One of the most exciting prospects for LISA is the detection of gravitational waves from the inspiral of compact objects into supermassive black holes. The large parameter space and low amplitude of possible signals makes detection a very challenging problem. However, it is clear that model waveform templates will be required in large numbers to enable source detection and parameter extraction. Computation of true gravitational waveforms requires solution of the Teukolsky equation, but this is too computationally demanding to generate templates in sufficient numbers. We will describe methods for the construction of approximate but faithful waveform templates, discuss their accuracy and describe how they can be used most effectively in scoping out and implementing LISA data analysis algorithms.
