Abstract

Lifetime of oscillons

Oscillons are remarkably long living localised time dependent apparently periodic configurations in nonlinear classical field theoretical models. In the proposed talk we intend to investigate the $\phi^4$ Klein-Gordon model also studied by Honda and Choptuik (Phys. Rev. D.65 (2002) 084037). The time evolution of spherically symmetric fields is simulated on Minkowski background by a fourth order method of lines code employing spatial compactification. The accuracy and reliability of the numerical analysis is shown to be high enough to indicate whether the oscillons are strictly periodic or they slowly decay. Independently, a spectral method analysis is performed to search for strictly periodic solutions.
