Rod-Structure of Stationary and Axisymmetric Metrics

An old and important problem in General Relativity is how to classify and categorize stationary and axisymmetric metrics. This problem has become even more important for higher-dimensional General Relativity, with the discovery of new solutions such as black rings. I discuss a proposal of how to categorize stationary and axisymmetric metrics from their rod-structure. If correct, the proposal gives a complete classification of stationary and axisymmetric metrics (that are asymptotically flat and in pure gravity).
