Abstract

PS

Gauge Theories, Strings and Cosmology

I review some of the early history of string theory and its relations to strong interactions. Then, D-branes and their gravitational properties are used to motivate the AdS/CFT correspondence between string theory in anti-de Sitter backgrounds and conformal gauge theories. Extensions of the gauge/gravity duality lead to warped throat backgrounds which provide solutions of certain confining gauge theories. The throat backgrounds may have applications to particle physics beyond the Standard Model, as well as to cosmological modeling

D-Branes on Cones and Gauge/Gravity Dualities

I review gravity duals of cascading gauge theories that arise on D-branes at the tip of Calabi-Yau cones, such as the conifold or Y^{p,q}. The IR physics of the conifold theory, encoded in the resolved warped deformed conifold is also discussed.
