THEORY OF THE CASIMIR EFFECT BETWEEN DIELECTRIC AND SEMICONDUCTOR PLATES

In the last few years the theory of the Casimir force between real metals has been the subject of hot discussions, whereas the case of dielectric plates was believed to be free of contradictions. Recently, however, it was shown that the inclusion of dc conductivity of dielectrics in the model of dielectric response leads to the violation of the Nernst heat theorem. This creates questions concerning the physical meaning of the zero-frequency contribution to the Lifshitz formula in the case of dielectrics. These questions will be discussed in the talk on the example of semiconductors with different conductivity which are in some sense intermediate materials between metals and dielectrics. We investigate also the role of dc conductivity in the Casimir interaction between metal and dielectric.
