Abstract

On quantum effects in the vicinity of would-be horizons

In the framework of QFT on curved spacetimes I will present estimates on the ground-state expectation value of the energy density operator. The spacetimes under consideration will coincide in their outer region with the Schwarschild spacetime, while their interior will be regular (horizon-free). By taking a family of spacetimes coinciding with Schwarzschild up to small distances from the horizon, I try to assert that Quantum Field Theory provides an indication that certain (static) spacetimes are "not far" from developing a horizon. I will also comment on the use of quations of state in the construction of stellar models.
