Abstract

PS

Intermediate Mass Black Holes and X-ray Sources

I will review the recent x-ray spectral, timing and positional information for the ultra-luminous x-ray sources in nearby galaxies and the evidence for and against their being intermediate mass black holes. There is now a large body of high quality x-ray spectral and timing data which can be used to compare these objects with stellar mass black holes in the Milky Way and supermassive black holes in the nuclei of galaxies. Despite this wealth of data, only two objects have shown evidence for QPOs and two have Fe K lines. A large survey of these objects have revealed patterns in their x-ray spectral behavior consistent with the existence of high mass objects in both the low and high states.
