Abstract

Phenomenological template bank for black hole merger waveforms

Coalescence of compact binaries typically involve three stages of evolution -- the adiabatic inspiral and merger, followed by a ring-down phase. Gravitational waveforms from the inspiral and ring-down phases can be accurately calculated by various approximation methods in General Relativity, while the calculation of merger waveforms requires exact numerical solutions of the Einstein equations. We present a phenomenological template family for black-hole merger waveforms. We discuss the implementation of the template bank in a matched-filter search for signatures of gravitational waves produced by black hole mergers in the data of ground-based interferometers.
