Abstract

GW3

GW detectors in space beyond LISA

With LISA Pathfinder well under way to its launch in 2009, and LISA proper to be launched in 2015, proposals are already forthcoming for detectors that go beyond LISA. The motivations for these proposals are different: bridge the frequency gap between space-borne and ground-based detectors (DECIGO); allow measurement of a primordial stochastic background (BBO); extending the frequency range to even lower frequencies (ASTROD). As the Japanese project is discussed in another talk (Masaki Ando), this talk will limit itself to the Big Bang Observer (BBO) and ASTROD. The motivations and the challenges of these projects will be discussed.
