Abstract

Test of Time Dilation with a Two-Velocity Atomic Clock

We report a new Ives-Stilwell-type time-dilation experiment that was carried out using a beam of singly-charged lithium ions stored in a heavy-ion storage ring. The Doppler-shifted frequencies of a suitable narrow transition at two different ion velocities v=0.030c and v=0.064c are measured to one part in 5 billion using laser saturation spectroscopy. Within this accuracy, our result agrees with the predicted time dilation from Special Relativity and, expressed in terms of the kinematical Robertson-Mansouri-Sexl test theory, the experiment sets an upper limit of 10^-7 for possible deviations. Moreover this Doppler shift experiment is sensitive to several parameters in the photon as well as the particle sector of the Standard Model Extension.
