Abstract

GW4

Hough search for continuous gravitational waves using LIGO S4 data

Isolated rotating neutron stars are expected to emit gravitational radiation of nearly constant frequency and amplitude. The LIGO Scientific Collaboration has developed several methods to search for such continuous gravitational-wave signals and searches are underway. One of these methods uses the Hough transform to search for the characteristic patterns produced by the signal in the time-frequency plane. We present an overview of the Hough method, and its application to LIGO data taken during the 30-day fourth science run (S4). Progress on plans to incorporate this method into future hierarchical searches will also be discussed.
