Abstract

GRB1

The X-ray afterglow of GRB 030329

The X-ray afterglow of the very bright GRB 030329 was observed at early times (5-30 hours after the burst) by RossiXTE and at late times (1-9 months after) by XMM-Newton. We found a steepening in the X-ray deacay at about 0.5 days, that can be interpreted as a jet break, since a similar break is also present in the much better sampled optical light curve. On the other hand, the absence of contamination from the underlying SN2003dh in the X-ray band gave us the opportunity to follow the afterglow a long time after the GRB and to have an indication of a flattening in its decay, later confirmed by radio observations, that we interpret as due to the transition to the non-relativistic Sedov-Taylor phase.
