Abstract

AT1

Spontaneous Lorentz Violation and Gravity

Gravitational theories with spontaneous breaking of Lorentz symmetry are investigated. Issues concerning the breaking of local Lorentz and diffeomorphism symmetry, the generation of Nambu-Goldstone modes, the possibility of a Higgs mechanism, and the effects of Lorentz violation on gravity are discussed. The Standard Model Extension (SME) is used as the framework for discussing the phenomenological implications and experimental signals of spontaneous Lorentz breaking.
