CHAOS AND SYMMETRY IN STRING COSMOLOGY

Long ago, Belinskii, Khalatnikov and Lifshitz (BKL) discovered the existence of a rich chaotic dynamical behaviour near generic cosmological singularities. It has been recently understood that this chaotic BKL structure: (i) also exists in (the low-energy limit of) String and M-theory, and (ii) contains a hidden symmetry structure described by some (infinite-dimensional) hyperbolic Kac-Moody algebra. The consideration of this hidden symmetry structure suggests potentially far-reaching conjectures about new formulations of M-theory (and General Relativity), and the `de-emergence' of space near a cosmological singularity.
