Abstract

QG2

Recent developments in Quantum Energy Inequalities

Although quantum fields cannot satisfy any of the energy conditions of classical general relativity, it has been shown that many quantum field models obey weaker constraints, known as Quantum Energy Inequalities (QEIs) in both flat and curved spacetime. This talk will summarise the present status of QEIs and describe current areas of progress. These include the development of "absolute" QEIs in curved spacetime (which directly constrain the renormalised stress-energy tensor) and QEIs in the context of local covariance. In particular, the latter leads to simple, geometrical, a priori bounds on negative energy densities in Minkowskian regions of spacetime.
