Abstract

Can strange stars be distinguished from neutron stars?

We consider the main sources of high energy radiation emission from quark stars. The bremsstrahlung surface photon emissivity of the quark matter and of the electrosphere is analyzed by taking into account the effects of the multiple scattering and of the electric field. A bremsstrahlung radiation spectrum, which could extend to very low frequencies, could be one of the main observational signatures for quark stars. An important energy emission mechanism is via pair creation in the electrosphere. By taking into account the inhomogeneities of the electric field distribution we find a lower electron-positron flux as previously estimated. We show that the magnetic field can enhance drastically the pair creation rate. We briefly consider the strophysical implications of the Bose-Einstein condensation on the quark star structure.
