Abstract

AP4

Ultrahigh energy cosmic rays

Cosmic rays reach energies beyond 10^20 eV and are therefore the most relativistc particles known to mankind. Their sheer existence poses puzzles that physicists try to answer since more than four decades. Where do these particles come from? What are they? How do they gain their energy? With the Pierre Auger Observatory for the first time an experiment can gather enough of these ultra-high energy particles to address these questions.
