Abstract

Strangelets in cosmic rays

I review the possible astrophysical production, acceleration and propagation of quark matter lumps (strangelets) in cosmic rays and argue that the co-existence of strange star and neutron star populations is unlikely because the galactic strangelet flux will serve as seeds for strange star formation. Previous strangelet search experiments are briefly summarized and an ongoing lunar soil strangelet search at Yale is described. Future possibilities with the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer on the International Space Station are also outlined.
