Coherent Network Search for Gravitational Waves from Spinning Neutron Stars: Parameter-space Covering

The sensitivity of a coherent search for continuous gravitational waves from unknown spinning neutron stars is limited by the computational resources required to cover the parameter space. The number of templates needed for the parameter-space covering grows with at least the fifth power of the integration time, making it impossible to increase the integration time of an all-sky, all-frequency search much beyond 50 hours. Another way to increase the sensitivity of a search is to combine the data of more than one detector coherently, but until recently it was not clear how the number of templates would scale with the number of detectors. In this talk I will present a recent result showing that the number of templates remains essentially unchanged when increasing the number of detectors, and I will discuss implications for the optimal parameter-space covering.
