Abstract

Measurements of electrical charge distribution variations on fused silica

Variation of electrical charge located on fused silica mirrors may produce excess noise in interferometric gravitational wave detectors due to interaction of charges with surroundings. Charge distribution on the detector’s mirror may be formed when it is in air before evacuation of the vacuum chamber. Distribution of charge located on the fused silica sample was measured using specially developed electrometer with the capacitive probe placed under the rotated sample. Results of measurements in air are presented. Some factors which determine distribution of electrical charge on fused silica were found. Effect of charging on the detector’s sensitivity is discussed.
