Abstract

GW4

Processing of the GW detector’s output with a non-Gaussian noise background

The problem of weak GW-signals detection is analyzed in respect of the gravitational wave experiment with bar antennae. An application of standard receipts of the linear theory of optimal filtering encounters with obstacles of large uncertainties of signal parameters as well as statistics of output noise. Several algorithms of data processing used up to now were limited by the choice of particular models of signal and empirical adaptive estimates of noise distribution. A brief review of such processing is critically discussed. Then a more general model of signal is introduced taking into account its initial phase in addition to traditional parameters of signal’s arrival time and amplitude. The empirical description of noise background is generalized through the formalism of contaminated distributions. In the frame of this approach we compose a formal optimal filtering procedure which includes a nonlinear processing of bar detector’s output combined with the usual whitening and matched filter. A relative effectiveness of the new algorithm is estimated Its application to the problem of searching for astro-gravity correlations is also discussed.
