Hough search for continuous gravitational waves using LIGO S4 data |
Abstract _ |
Isolated rotating neutron stars are expected to emit gravitational radiation of nearly constant frequency and amplitude. The LIGO Scientific Collaboration has developed several methods to search for such continuous gravitational-wave signals and searches are underway. One of these methods uses the Hough transform to search for the characteristic patterns produced by the signal in the time-frequency plane. We present an overview of the Hough method, and its application to LIGO data taken during the 30-day fourth science run (S4). Progress on plans to incorporate this method into future hierarchical searches will also be discussed. |
