APT3 - Extreme Properties of Neutron Stars: Observations and Theory

How high a hill can you make on a neutron star?

Abstract_

Neutron stars may be much more solid than we thought, provided their cores contain more than just neutrons. Such stars could support elastic deformations up to 1000 times more than standard neutron stars. Gravitational waves from such stars could be detected by initial LIGO or make upper limits interesting if there is no detection. Deformations of this magnitude also make starquakes more plausible as explanations for pulsar glitches and the largest superflare from a soft gamma repeater.
