 Talk_

Wave scattering and absorption by rotating black holes

Abstract_

In this talk I will discuss the scattering and absorption of quantum waves. I start by reviewing the wave equations that describe linear perturbations in physical fields on the Schwarzschild and Kerr backgrounds. I look at perturbative and numerical methods for determining cross sections, and present new results for fermion waves. Next, I examine the effects of spin on cross sections and polarisation, and discuss the absence of superradiance for fermions in the Kerr case. Finally, I outline difficulties in constructing solutions that are physical at both horizons on the Kerr background.
