An extremality condition for dynamical horizons

Abstract_

We introduce a notion of black hole extremality which is valid on both dynamical and isolated horizons. On an isolated horizon, it agrees with the standard definition of extremality based on vanishing surface gravity. We show that all dynamical horizons must be sub-extremal. Thus, we are able to place a restriction on the total angular momentum of a dynamical horizon.
