Binary black hole evolutions with spectral methods

Abstract_

Numerical simulation of the coalescence of two black holes is of significant interest for gravitational wave detectors for at least two reasons: First, the merger waveform can only be obtained with full numerical simulations. Second, long term evolutions lasting multiple orbits are necessary to investigate how close to coalescence post-Newtonian expansions break down and fully numerical waveforms-templates are required. In this talk, I outline the status of the Cornell-Caltech effort to simulate binary black hole spacetimes. I present evolutions lasting multiple orbits, and I discuss methods to assess accuracy and physical relevance of these evolutions.
