Cosmology without the fluid approximation

We investigate inhomogeneous cosmological models that have a matter content composed of many discrete sources, rather than a continuous energy density. It is found that while the dynamics of the expansion approach the standard FRW results in the limit of homogeneity, the optical properties of the space-time do not. As such, corrections to the standard luminosity distance-redshift relations are required. This has consequences for parameter estimation and model testing.
