Abstract

Conservative post-Newtonian binary dynamics via effective field theory

Recently, a new method of calculating in the post-Newtonian expansion has been introduced. As proposed by Goldberger and Rothstein, this approach employs the techniques of effective field theory, methods that have been in routine use in the particle physics community for many decades. Within this new framework, I will focus on gravitational bound states and discuss the recent calculation of the conservative second post-Newtonian binary dynamics. For the conservative dynamics, the use of a metric parametrization based on a temporal Kaluza-Klein decomposition is shown to have important calculational advantages, particularly when used at higher orders in the post-Newtonian expansion. Additionally, progress we are making towards the calculation of the conservative third post-Newtonian binary dynamics will be presented.
