Abstract

Towards tests of alternative theories of gravity with LISA

The inspiral of stellar compact objects into massive black holes is one of the most important sources of gravitational waves for the future Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA), usually known as extreme-mass-ratio inspirals (EMRIs). In the case of intermediate-mass black holes (intermediate-mass-ratio inspirals, IMRIs), these binary systems are of interest for advance ground-based gravitational-wave observatories. In this talk, I will discuss how modifications of the gravitational interaction can affect the signals emitted by these systems and their detectability by LISA. I will illustrate this in the specific case of Chern-Simons modified gravity, a theory that emerges from different approaches to quantum gravity. For details see: http://arxiv.org/abs/0904.4501
