Gravitational Waves from SGR Bursts |
Soft gamma repeaters (SGRs) have unique properties that make them intriguing GW targets. They are nearby, their burst emission mechanism may involve neutron star crust fractures and excitation of non-radial modes, and they burst repeatedly and sometimes spectacularly. Recent LIGO searches for transient GW from these sources have placed upper limits on a set of more than 200 individual SGR bursts from SGR 1900+14 and SGR 1806-20 including the 2004 giant flare; have stacked potential signals from the 2006 SGR 1900+14 storm to place improved upper limits on that event; and have examined recent activity from SGR 0501+4516 which may be only 1.5 kpc from Earth. We present the results from these searches, and discuss the astrophysics that is beginning to emerge from SGR GW searches. |
