Abstract

GW5

Advanced LIGO Status

The Advanced LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory) project has been funded for over a year and construction activities are progressing. Advanced LIGO is planned to have roughly a factor of 10 better sensitivity across a wider sensitive bandwidth of 10 Hz to about 5 kHz, and should allow for frequent detections of gravitational waves. I will discuss the design and expected sensitivity of Advanced LIGO, the status of major subsystems, and the expected schedule leading to data taking. I will also discuss some of the astrophysics that is expected to be possible with Advanced LIGO and the implications for better understanding of gravity.
