Abstract

Charged Unruh effect without globally-defined charge

We study the Unruh effect for a charged scalar field on a geon-type Rindler spacetime with a constant background magnetic field. The novel feature is that the charge of the field now has a global sign ambiguity, which is not classically detectable within the Rindler wedge. We analyse how this charge ambiguity shows up in the Unruh effect seen by a Rindler observer. Generalisations to charged geon-type black hole spacetimes are discussed.
