Abstract

GW3

Gravity gradient noise

In this talk I will discuss gravity Gravity Gradient Noise, the direct coupling of an interferometer's test masses to gravitational fields generated by mass density fluctuations in the surrounding environment. This is probably the most fundamental limit for the sensitivity of next generations gravitational waves' detectors. After a review of the existing results, I will present a new modelization technique which allows to estimate the effect of seismic induced GGN from a given set of seismic motion measurements. I will discuss also the possibility of reducing GGN. Several proposals exist, in this talk I will concentrate mainly on the advantages of building the detector underground, and on the expected performances of a noise subtraction procedure.
