Abstract

Ultra-relativistic grazing collisions of black holes

We present numerical simulations of ultra-relativistic collisions of black holes with non-zero impact parameter performed in the framework of fully non-linear general relativity. The simulations are analyzed with particular regard to the occurrence of "zoom-whirl" behavior in such experiments, the magnitude of the critical impact parameter separating merging from scattering configurations and the maximum spin resulting from black-hole binary coalescence.
