Abstract

Accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars

Since the discovery of the first accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar in 1998, nine additional systems have been found. Several of them show strange and enigmatic behavior. Three systems are intermittent pulsars, meaning they are only exhibiting oscillations for a small fraction of the time they are in outburst; other systems show strong timing noise in their phase residuals. The reason behind the intermittent nature of some pulsars as well as the cause of this timing noise are not understood. I will present an overview of our current understanding and knowledge of this field.
