Brane Cosmology in String/M Theory on S1/Z2

In this talk, I shall first give a brief review on the hierarchy and cosmological constant problems, as well as on the late cosmic acceleration of the universe. Then, I shall show how these problems might be resolved in the brane worlds of string/M-Theory on $S^{1}/Z_{2}$. Working with orbifold branes, two important issues need to be addressed: (a) Radion stability and radion mass, (b) Localization of gravity, the 4D Newtonian effective potential and its Yukawa corrections from the high-order gravitational Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes. I shall show explicitly that the radion is stable and its mass is about $10^{-2}\; GeV$. The gravity is localized on the visible brane, and the gravitational KK towers are discrete, and can have a mass gap of $TeV$. The Yukawa corrections are exponentially suppressed. Applying the models to cosmology, we find that the late transient acceleration of the universe is a generic feature of the setup. In such a setup, it is also possible to have a bouncing universe.
