Spin foam models and the transition from first order to second order gravity |
Spin foam models can be regarded as a new attempt to formulate first order gravity on a lattice. In the continuum, the first order formulation reduces to Einstein gravity, when one goes on-shell with the connection. An important question is whether an analogous statement holds true for the spin foam models. We have shown that this is the case: the equations of motion for the connection can be solved exactly on an arbitrary simplicial complex, and on these solutions the action reduces to the Regge action. More recently, we have solved part of these equations even at the quantum level, using methods of geometric quantization. |
