Abstract

The Beginnings of Black Hole Horizons

Black hole horizons are null hypersurfaces in a black hole spacetime that are generated by null geodesics with no future endpoints. For a non-eternal black hole, the set of points where these generators enter the horizon can be regarded as the beginning of the black hole. General properties of this spacelike, connected set are discussed, and examples given from 2+1-dimensional gravity, where this set can be explicitly constructed for the case of rather general, asymmetric gravitational collapse.
