Abstract

Hyper Velocity Stars and the Restricted Parabolic 3-Body Problem

We formulate a binary - massive black hole encounter as a restricted parabolic three body problem. Since the total mass of the binary is significantly smaller than the black hole mass, this is an excellent approximation. In this framework, the orbit of a disrupted binary is characterized analytically in term of the binary mass ratio, and the ratio of the total binary mass to the central black hole. Using analytic estimates and Monte-Carlo simulations, we will discuss the probabilities for disruptions and ejection velocities. probabilities for disruptions and ejection velocities.
