Abstract

EG4

Planetary light deflection and astrometry

The path of stellar light crossing the solar system is perturbed by the gravitational field of the Sun and to a lesser extent by that of the planets. With astrometric measurements of angular direction to better than 100 mus it is possible to carry out small field experiments around the giant planets to see this tiny deflection and even detect the departure from the central monopole contribution. I will show how this can be done in practice with Gaia and the kind of optimisations which are conducted to reach this goal.
