Abstract

GRB3

Properties of the GRB early afterglow and their interpretation

The Swift satellite detects around 100 GRBs per year using its on-board Burst Alert Telescope. The Swift X-ray Telescope subsequently provides data covering many decades in flux and time. These data reveal a wide variety of behaviour in the temporal variability of both the broad-band flux and spectral shape. Similar complexity is seen in other multi-wavelength data. I will summarise the observations, show examples of comparing data to current GRB models and outline some of the outstanding physical problems yet to be resolved.
