Progress of a High-Frequency Gravitational Experiment Below 50 Microns |
We report on the progress of a continuing experiment designed to be sensitive to gravity and possible new forces in nature at length scales below 50 microns. The experiment uses resonant 1 kHz mechanical oscillators as test masses with a stiff conducting shield between them to suppress backgrounds, a technique that has proven successful in operating at the thermal noise limit for slightly larger experimental ranges. Test mass separations as low as 48 microns have been attained with the present apparatus. Recent data from the experiment have revealed a resonant force of approximately ten times the limiting thermal noise, which is most likely ascribable to a vibrational background. Current upgrades and the expected sensitivity of the experiment will be described. |
