Abstract

On the nonlinear asymptotics of travelling gravitational waves in the harmonic gauge

Travelling gravitational waves experience a nonlinear self-interaction due to nonlinearity of the Einstein equations. For some model astrophysical sources we calculate the asymptotics of the metric waves going out to future null infinity. We show that the leading order term in the harmonic gauge is logarithmic and represents a purely gauge effect. We discuss potential negative consequences of this fact for the mathematical and numerical relativity.
