Talk Title

The Final Merged Black Hole: Spin, Mass, Hidden Symmetries and Dimensional Reduction

Abstract

I will present results from a study of scattering/hyperbolic mergers of equal mass, spinning black holes. These encounters are plunge coalescences aimed at minimizing angular momentum radiation losses during the merger, thus maximizing the final spin of the merged black hole. We find that the final spin of the black hole can reach a maximum spin a/M ~ 0.975 when extrapolated to maximal spinning merging black holes. We also find that, as one increases the initial orbital angular momentum, the final black hole has spin a/M_h ~ 0.897 and mass M ~ 0.905 of the total mass, independently of how the total initial angular momentum is distributed among the orbit and spins the merging black holes.
