A new numerical strategy for the dynamics of spherically symmetric spacetimes

Abstract

We have developed a new and efficient strategy for the dynamics of spherically symmetric gravitational spacetimes based on the Galerkin method. We have considered the application of our strategy in two matter models. The first is the implosion of scalar field waves that has been studied in connection with the critical phenomena in gravitational collapse, and the second matter model is a perfect fluid commonly used to describe the dynamics of neutron stars. We have analyzed the issues of efficiency with moderate computational resources through the code tests. We briefly discuss the extension of the code to non-spherically symmetric spacetimes with the Bondi problem.
