Talk Title

Dynamical shift conditions for binary black hole simulations

Abstract

The purpose of this talk is to discuss 3D simulations for late inspiral, merger. and ringdown of black hole binaries without spin in quasi-circular orbits. We are especially interested in increasing the mass ratio of the black holes in our. simulations. While the equal mass case is now quite well studied, increasing the mass ratio is still a demanding challenge. Despite their difference in size, both black holes have to be resolved equally well and we have to make sure that the code can handle the asymmetry in the numerical grid which becomes more difficult with increasing mass ratio. In order to allow for simulations of higher mass ratios we studied the influence of the damping parameter used in the shift condition and present first results of dynamically adjusted damping which aims at adjusting the coordinates according to the positions of both holes.
