Determination of unambiguous binary black hole merger waveforms at scri

Abstract

We have implemented the computation of gravitational waveforms by means of Cauchy characteristic extraction (CCE). The implementation is general purpose, with the extraction performed as a post-processing operation, taking as input ADM data written to file during an earlier evolution. Thus, the implementation is independent of the underlying 3+1 code which was used to generate the data. The code has been validated by convergence testing against analytic solutions. We present preliminary results for the waveform produced by the inspiral and merger of two equal mass, non-spinning, black holes, using a BSSN code for the Cauchy evolution. We compare our results to those obtained by extrapolating to infinity $\psi_4$ extraction data at several finite radii.
